Since 2006, the Cornell Wind Ensemble has undertaken a performance and service learning tour in Costa Rica during the month of January. (Please visit the Costa Rica Partnership page for more details about past tours and the Cornell Wind Ensemble’s donation of over 230 instruments to Costa Rican music schools.) This year’s tour will take place (roughly) January 8-19, 2012 and involve a visit to Tortuga Island in the Nicoya Pennisula, workshops with young Costa Rican music students in five schools (including reunions with schools visited last year), and ten performances (including the residence of the United States Ambassador, the Centro Cultural, and the National Theatre plaza, as well as numerous venues across the country). Thanks to the generous support of Ronni Lacroute and various agencies across the Cornell campus, per person cost of the tour is minimal.
The CU Wind Symphony and associated student organization CU Winds unite student musicians dedicated to the study and performance of emerging and traditional wind repertoire. We explore music making as a vehicle for cross-cultural exchange and collaboration, and in doing so support Cornell's core values of public engagement and global awareness.
