Rehearsals for the fourth biennial performing and service learning tour begin on January 3 and run until our departure at 3:30am(!) on January 8. This year’s tour adds another community-building dimension to the Costa Rica/CU Winds partnership. Music Director Cynthia Johnston Turner and administrators at SiNEM have chosen 6 outstanding Costa Rican student musicians to join us on this year’s tour. Those 6 students will meet CU Winds at the airport on January 8, have one rehearsal with the Wind Ensemble (the Costa Rica musicians were sent their music ahead of time), and be part of the Wind Ensemble as it tours, teaches, and donates instruments around the country. Communities visited on this tour are Grecia, San Ramon, Leon XIII, Curridabat, Pavas, Puntarenus, and three schools on the Nicoya Pennisula. There is still time to donate sheet music or an instrument!
The CU Wind Symphony and associated student organization CU Winds unite student musicians dedicated to the study and performance of emerging and traditional wind repertoire. We explore music making as a vehicle for cross-cultural exchange and collaboration, and in doing so support Cornell's core values of public engagement and global awareness.
